Travel with Intention: Discovering Black History and Culture Around the World

Travel often means seeing new places and ticking off famous landmarks. But for me, travel is much more than sightseeing. It is a journey of self-discovery and cultural connection. I travel with intention, seeking out Black history and culture wherever I go. This approach has deepened my understanding of the world and myself. It has shown me that Black history is not confined to one country or story—it is a global narrative that connects us all.

In this post, I want to share how I explore Black history and culture through travel. I will take you through some of my meaningful visits in the United States and abroad. These experiences have shaped my travel philosophy and inspired me to keep looking for myself in every destination.

Exploring Black History in the United States

My journey begins at home, in the United States, where Black history is rich and complex. Visiting places like the Harriet Tubman Museum in Maryland, Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, and The Legacy Museum in Montgomery has given me a deeper appreciation of the struggles and triumphs of Black Americans.

Harriet Tubman Museum, Maryland

The Harriet Tubman Museum honors the life of one of the most courageous figures in American history. Walking through the exhibits, I felt connected to her bravery and determination. The museum tells the story of her work on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people find freedom. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience and hope.

16th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham

This church is a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement. It was the site of a tragic bombing in 1963 that killed four young girls. Visiting the church and its memorials was emotional. It made me reflect on the sacrifices made for justice and equality. The church stands as a beacon of faith and courage.

The Legacy Museum, Montgomery

The Legacy Museum offers a sobering look at the history of slavery, segregation, and mass incarceration. It connects the past to present-day issues. The museum’s storytelling is immersive and impactful. It challenged me to think about how history shapes our current society.

These sites are more than tourist stops. They are places of learning and reflection. For black women travel enthusiasts like me, they offer a chance to connect with our roots and honor those who came before us.

Discovering Afro-Latinx Heritage Abroad

Black history is global. Traveling internationally has shown me how African culture and heritage have influenced many parts of the world. Two places that stand out are Cartagena, Colombia, and Cuba.

Afro-Colombian History in Cartagena

Cartagena’s old town is famous for its colonial charm, but it also holds deep Afro-Colombian roots. I visited neighborhoods where descendants of enslaved Africans live and celebrate their culture. The city’s music, food, and festivals reflect this heritage. Learning about the African influence on Colombia’s identity expanded my view of the African diaspora.

African Cultural Influence in Cuba

Cuba’s culture is a blend of African, Spanish, and indigenous traditions. I explored museums and cultural centers that highlight African contributions to Cuban music, religion, and art. The rhythms of Afro-Cuban music and the vibrant dance scenes brought history to life. It was a joyful experience that connected me to a shared heritage across borders.

Traveling with intention means seeking these stories and experiences. It means going beyond the surface to understand the people and histories that shape a place.

Continuing the Journey: Chicago’s Obama Presidential Center

My next destination is Chicago, where the Obama Presidential Center is taking shape. This center will celebrate the legacy of the first Black president of the United States and his family. It promises to be a space for education, inspiration, and community.

For me, visiting this center will be another step in my journey of intentional travel. It will offer new insights into leadership, history, and the ongoing fight for equality. I look forward to sharing what I learn there with other black women travel lovers who want to explore history with purpose.
