Delta & Amex Just Changed the Travel Game—Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’re a Delta flyer—or you’ve been thinking about becoming one—Delta and American Express have rolled out some changes worth knowing about.
And before we go any further, let me say this:
I am NOT telling everybody to run out and get another credit card. 😂
But I am a big believer in knowing what travel benefits are available and deciding whether they make sense for the way you actually travel.
There are two things I want you to know about: an update to Delta’s annual Companion Certificate benefit and a new limited-time welcome offer that definitely made me look twice.
First: What Is the Delta Companion Certificate?
Eligible Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Reserve American Express cardmembers receive one Companion Certificate each year after renewing their card.
With the Platinum card, the certificate is eligible for certain Delta Main round-trip flights. Reserve cardmembers have broader cabin eligibility that can include Delta First, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main, depending on availability and the applicable terms.
Eligible Companion Certificate travel includes destinations within the United States as well as Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Government-imposed taxes and fees apply, along with fare-class availability and other restrictions.
Here’s the New Companion Certificate Perk 👀
Eligible Platinum and Reserve Companion Certificates can now be redeemed toward the eligible flight portion of a Delta Vacations package.
That does not mean the certificate pays for the hotel, excursions or entire vacation package. It applies to the eligible flight portion.
If you already receive a Companion Certificate every year and sometimes book Delta Vacations, you now have another potential way to put that benefit to work.
But THIS Is the Offer Everybody Is Talking About 👀✈️
Beginning August 27, Delta and American Express launched limited-time welcome offers for eligible new Delta SkyMiles American Express cardmembers.
And the Reserve Card offer is the one that caught my attention.
Eligible new Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card members can currently earn:
TWO Round-Trip Delta Comfort Flight Certificates PLUS 50,000 Bonus Miles after spending $10,000 in purchases on the new card within the first six months of card membership. The offer ends November 4, 2026.
Yes.
TWO round-trip flight certificates. 👀😂
But keep reading, because this is where the details matter.
Those Two Flight Certificates Have Rules
The promotional flight certificates can be used for eligible Delta Comfort or Delta Main round-trip travel on Delta-operated flights within the lower 48 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Delta says the certificates have no blackout dates, although that doesn’t mean every flight will necessarily be available.
There is also a 21-day advance-purchase requirement, and taxes and fees of up to $80 per person can apply. Additional terms and restrictions apply.
And here’s an important distinction:
These two promotional flight certificates are part of the current welcome offer. They are NOT the same thing as the annual Companion Certificate Reserve cardmembers receive after card renewal.
Now Let’s Talk About That $10,000 👀
Because this is where Dr. Drea puts on her sensible hat. 😂
The Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card currently carries a $650 annual fee.
And $10,000 in purchases within six months is a significant spending requirement.
Before you get excited about two flight certificates and start moving every bill known to mankind onto a new credit card 😂, ask yourself:
* Do I already fly Delta regularly?
* Would I naturally spend $10,000 over six months anyway?
* Can I pay those purchases responsibly without carrying expensive debt?
* Will I actually use the card’s ongoing benefits?
* Does the value I expect to receive justify the $650 annual fee?
* Do the destinations and restrictions on the promotional certificates work for the way I travel?
Don’t spend $10,000 you weren’t already going to spend just to earn a travel perk.
That “free” flight gets expensive real quick when you’re paying credit-card interest to earn it.
And There Are Other New Delta Card Benefits
While the two-flight offer is getting the attention, Delta has also added other benefits across parts of its SkyMiles Amex portfolio.
For example, eligible Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum and Reserve consumer cardmembers now receive a second checked bag free on domestic Delta flights, in addition to the existing first-checked-bag benefit.
So if you’re comparing cards, don’t look at one flashy welcome offer in isolation.
Look at the whole package and ask yourself which benefits you would genuinely use after the welcome bonus is gone.

I LOVE a good travel perk. 😂
Miles. Hotel points. Companion certificates. Free bags. Upgrades.
If I’m spending money anyway, I absolutely want to understand what benefits I can get from it.
But I don’t believe in chasing points just because somebody put a giant number on an advertisement.
The best travel credit card isn’t necessarily the one offering the biggest bonus. It’s the one whose benefits match the way YOU actually travel.
If you’re a frequent Delta flyer, can comfortably meet the spending requirement with purchases you were already going to make, and know you’ll use the ongoing Reserve benefits, this offer is absolutely worth looking at and doing the math on.
For everybody else?
