The Essence of Travel Slowing Down to Embrace the Journey

Travel often feels like a race against time. We rush from one landmark to the next, snapping photos and checking off lists. But some experiences demand a slower pace. This past June, I discovered how stepping back and savoring moments can transform travel into something deeper and more meaningful. From the vast, quiet landscapes of Iceland to the rich cultural celebrations in the Pacific Northwest, the journey itself became the destination.

Iceland’s Landscapes Teach Patience

Iceland’s natural beauty is impossible to rush. The island’s rugged terrain, with its waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic fields, invites travelers to pause and absorb. Driving along the Ring Road, I found myself stopping frequently—not because I had to, but because the scenery demanded it.

One moment, I was standing at the base of a waterfall, feeling the cool mist on my face. The sound was steady and calming, a reminder that nature moves at its own pace. No matter how fast I wanted to go, the landscape encouraged me to slow down and simply be present.

This experience highlighted how travel is not just about reaching a place but about connecting with the environment. Iceland’s vastness and quietness create space for reflection, something that gets lost when we rush through destinations.

Cultural Richness in the Pacific Northwest

After Iceland, my journey continued to the Pacific Northwest, where the cultural scene offered a different kind of richness. Portland’s Juneteenth celebrations stood out as a powerful reminder of history, community, and resilience. The event was filled with music, art, and storytelling, each element inviting attendees to engage deeply rather than skim the surface.

Walking through the streets, I noticed how the city’s energy shifted during the celebration. People took time to listen, learn, and honor the significance of the day. It was a sharp contrast to the usual fast pace of urban life, showing how slowing down can foster understanding and connection.

Unique Stops That Make Travel Special

Travel is also about the unexpected moments that don’t fit into any itinerary. In Portland, a visit to Powell’s Books became a highlight. This massive bookstore, with its labyrinth of shelves and cozy reading nooks, encouraged me to lose track of time. Browsing through countless titles, I felt the joy of discovery without pressure.

Seattle offered another unique experience with a visit to the first Starbucks. It’s easy to overlook such places, but standing in that original café, I reflected on how small beginnings can grow into something much larger. The slow evolution of this brand mirrored the idea that meaningful journeys unfold over time.

The Journey Itself Holds Stories

Travel is often measured by destinations reached, but the modes of travel shape the stories we carry. Whether flying over oceans, driving winding roads, or walking city streets, each method offers a different perspective.

In June, I traveled by plane, car, and on foot, noticing how each slowed or sped up my experience. Flying gave a quick transition between places but felt detached. Driving allowed me to see changing landscapes and stop spontaneously. Walking through neighborhoods revealed details missed from a car window.

These varied experiences reminded me that the journey is not just a means to an end. It’s a collection of moments, interactions, and reflections that enrich travel beyond the final destination.

Embracing Moments Over Destinations

The essence of travel lies in appreciating the moments that happen along the way. It’s about noticing the small details—a waterfall’s spray, a community’s celebration, a quiet bookstore corner—that create lasting memories.

Slowing down allows travelers to connect more deeply with places and people. It encourages curiosity, patience, and openness. Instead of rushing to see everything, embracing the journey means choosing quality over quantity.

Travel teaches us that the best experiences cannot be hurried. They require time, attention, and a willingness to be present. This June’s journey through Iceland and the Pacific Northwest showed me that slowing down is not a limitation but a gift. It transforms travel from a checklist into a meaningful adventure.

When I look back on June, I don’t think about how many miles we traveled or how many places we checked off a list.

I think about the moments.

This month took us from Iceland’s dramatic landscapes to the vibrant cities and coastal beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Every destination had its own personality, its own story, and its own lesson waiting to be discovered.

In Iceland, we stood behind powerful waterfalls, walked across volcanic black sand beaches, and found ourselves surrounded by landscapes that looked almost too beautiful to be real. Nature reminded us to slow down, look around, and simply take it all in.

Then the journey carried us to the Pacific Northwest.

In Portland, we celebrated Juneteenth by exploring the historic Alberta and Albina neighborhoods, proudly representing GirlTREK in the Juneteenth Parade, and honoring the history, resilience, and culture of Portland’s Black community.

We wandered through the endless shelves of Powell’s Books, experienced the excitement of Seattle’s Starbucks Reserve Roastery, and visited the very first Starbucks—a simple stop that somehow still felt iconic.

Our adventure even crossed international waters aboard a ferry to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. From its picturesque harbor to its welcoming atmosphere, Victoria reminded us that every destination has something unique to offer when we take the time to experience it instead of simply passing through.

One of my favorite memories from June wasn’t a destination at all.

It was the journey.

We traveled by airplane, private transportation, train, ferry, bus, and plenty of walking. Every mile offered a different view, a different conversation, and another reminder that sometimes the road between destinations becomes just as meaningful as the destination itself.

That’s exactly why I created Lets Get Packing.

Yes, we visit beautiful places.

But more importantly, we create experiences.

We make space for meaningful conversations over dinner, laughter that echoes through the group, moments of quiet reflection, and those unexpected discoveries that no itinerary could ever fully capture.

Because years from now, we won’t remember every street we walked or every item we packed.

We’ll remember standing behind a waterfall.

We’ll remember celebrating Juneteenth in a city that welcomed us with open arms.

We’ll remember watching the coastline drift by from the ferry, admiring mountain views from the train, and realizing that every part of the journey mattered.

We’ll remember how we felt.

And isn’t that what travel is really about?

As I flipped through the photos from June, I realized something.

The greatest souvenirs aren’t the ones we buy.

They’re the memories we create, the friendships we strengthen, the stories we carry home, and the confidence we gain from stepping outside of our everyday lives.

June reminded me why I love what I do.

Not because I get to see the world.

But because I get to help other women experience it in meaningful ways.

Because at Lets Get Packing, we believe the journey begins long before you arrive… and the memories last long after you return home.

So wherever your passport takes you next, I hope you choose experiences over checklists, connection over convenience, and memories over moments that simply pass by.

I can’t wait to see where the journey takes us next.
