Sunscreen & Melanin: Why We Still Need Protection, Sis!

Let’s clear something up real quick: Melanin is magic, but it’s not a shield.
Too many of us grew up hearing, “Black don’t crack,” and while yes, our skin does age beautifully, that doesn’t mean it’s immune to sun damage. Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach or fair-skinned folks—it’s an everyday essential, even for the melanin-rich!
The Truth About Melanin & UV Rays
Melanin gives our skin that beautiful deep tone, and it does offer some natural protection from the sun. But here’s the catch—it’s not enough. Our melanin provides an SPF of about 13… maybe 15. That’s way below the dermatologist-recommended SPF 30 minimum.

So what happens when we skip the sunscreen?
• Sunburns: Yep, we can get them too. They may not always show up bright red, but peeling, tenderness, and heat? All signs you’ve had too much sun.
• Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots, uneven tone, and scars that won’t fade? Sun exposure makes it worse—especially for us.
• Skin cancer: While rates are lower in Black communities, studies show that when we do get it, it’s often found later and in more dangerous stages.
Vacationing or Vibing—Wear It Daily

Whether you’re lounging on a yacht in Santorini or just out running errands, sunscreen should be part of your skincare lineup. Make it the last step after moisturizing—face, neck, chest, and any skin that’s out in the sun.
What Kind of Sunscreen is Best?

Let’s be real: nobody wants to walk around with that ghostly white cast. Thankfully, the beauty game has stepped up. Look for:
• Mineral sunscreens with tinted formulas (great for sensitive skin)
• Black-owned brands made with us in mind (Shout out to Black Girl Sunscreen)
• SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum (protects from UVA and UVB)
Pro tip: Reapply every 2 hours when you’re outside. Yes, even over makeup—there are sprays and powders for that!
Don’t Forget to Pack It
At Let’s Get Packing, we don’t just plan vacations—we prepare you to show up glowing and protected. That means sunscreen in the travel pouch, in the beach bag, and in the daypack. Period.
Protect the Glow
Your skin is stunning—rich, radiant, and resilient. But even the most luxurious melanin deserves care. Sunscreen isn’t optional; it’s an act of love. So whether you’re sipping mimosas in Miami or snapping selfies in the Mediterranean, remember: sunscreen is self-care, sis.
Now go glow responsibly. ✨
